Much of it can now be found online in the “dark web”, “dark net” or the “deep web”. Naturally, this is now a source of contention for federal law enforcement and the FDA will have to play a game of “catch-up” in the coming years in order to regulate this new uncharted territory. Back when I wrote this series of blogs I focused my Dark Web story on Silk Road as the epitome of illegal drug markets, which was shut down in 2013.

They observed that most vendors are casual dealers, selling relatively small amounts, and spend only a few months on a site. About 70% of vendors sold less than $1,000 worth of product in the period they surveyed. Only about 2% sold more than $100,000, and just 35 kingpin vendors sold over $1 million. Despite the variety of things on offer, cocaine, MDMA, and cannabis made up about 70% of sales; and while most listings were for cannabis-related products, an overwhelming majority of the revenue came from selling MDMA and cocaine. The surface web is what most of us use every day for our work, shopping or enjoyment.

An online dealer who flogs dross gets bad reviews and loses clients. The secretive nature of dark-web markets makes them difficult to study. But last year a researcher using the pseudonym Gwern Branwen cast some light on them. Roughly once a week between December 2013 and July 2015, programmes he had written crawled 90-odd cryptomarkets, archiving a snapshot of each page. The 16-year old son of famous television therapist Dr. Laura Berman died after overdosing on fentanyl.
Less fraud and a better Internet depend on addressing the systems failures that generate these vectors, as well as users who exercise a bit of critical thinking when presented with something too good to be true. But Nichols, fed up with bad transactions from dealers on the street, and poor quality drugs, reached for his smart phone, and entered the DarkNet to find his fix online. Detective Alan Carbery, who works in the Criminal Assets Bureau , said organised crime gangs were also now routinely using cryptocurrency to launder money made selling drugs. The overwhelming majority of buyers on Cryptomarket made only one purchase – just 18 percent bought drugs two or more times.

FBI cracks down on DarkNet as addicts go online to buy drugs
Considering the dealers seem to be assuming less risk, it is a surprise that they are able to charge more for their illegal, and oftentimes harmful, products. Though this may not be a problem for the addict with tons of cash flow, that is not ordinarily the case. For the majority of users, the dark web is often highly unaffordable. So, even if they were to somehow gain access in order to buy them, they most likely would be deterred because it typically costs much more than just meeting your dealer on the street. The DHS’s subpoena will no doubt serve as a jarring reminder to Reddit’s dark web drug forum that those discussions are nakedly public and potentially vulnerable to law enforcement.

What is Silk Road?
Essentially, the dark web is a part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines. Its anonymous nature, means that it cannot be found by searching in places like Google, or by stumbling upon it accidentally. Since the demise of Silk Road, theft by market operators, deceit by vendors and arrest by authorities have been significant risks for market participants.
Though the drug sales themselves are generally hosted on sites that require users to run the anonymity software Tor to hide their identities, Reddit offers no such protection. Branwen says he expects his revelation of the subpoena to drive many of r/darknetmarket’s conversations to Tor-protected forums like the drug-market discussion site called the Hub. “Riskier discussions will move onto the Hub, and as long as the Reddit admins don’t get spooked and shut it down similar to /r/jailbait, [r/darknetmarkets] will remain a useful discussion place,” he says.
Silk Road 2.0 came online the next month, run by former site administrators, but was shut down the following year as part of Operation Onymous. In 2015, Ulbricht was convicted in federal court for multiple charges related to operating Silk Road and was given two life sentences without possibility of parole. While it’s not technically illegal to use the dark web (it’s often the only way for people in countries run by totalitarian governments to communicate with each other), you open yourself up to government monitoring, malicious software and scams.
Combating Transnational Crime
The special browsers rely on encrypted servers that allow individuals to visit dark web sites without being traced. Not only that, but you’ll also have to wait a longer period of time to get your drugs delivered to you in the mail. For people looking to get a quick fix for their withdrawal symptoms, this isn’t the answer. Drugs are more expensive, take longer to arrive, and are overall more dangerous. If you really need to avoid withdrawal symptoms, it’s much safer to get drugs from the street.
