What Are Darknet Drug Markets?
Fraud Tools And Data
Darknet drug markets are online marketplaces where illicit drugs are bought and sold using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. These markets operate on the dark web, a part of the internet that is not indexed by search engines and requires special software to access. Darknet drug markets are often associated with the Silk Road, an online marketplace that was shut down by the FBI in 2013, but have since proliferated and evolved.
The Silk Road defined its name based on the historical network of trade routes between Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and Europe. And although the Silk Road hasn’t operated for years, it laid the foundation for other darknet markets to follow. Today, the Silk Road is an important case study when analyzing the growth of other dark web markets.
In an annual online crypto crime report, blockchain investigations firm Chainalysis details the statistics related to online criminal activity involving cryptocurrency. The past few months has seen a surge of darknet market closures, but few of them have been the result of takedowns where to buy fentanyl or exit scams. Over the past year, several major marketplaces with total sales of over $1 billion have shuttered in this way. Other markets touted in dark web forums like Archetyp and Incognito, meanwhile, have only a few thousand or just a few hundred listings. All of that suggests AlphaBay may already be the most popular market for dark web vendors to list their wares for sale.
How Do Darknet Drug Markets Work?
Law enforcement conducted more seizures—including 117 firearms—during Operation SpecTor than any prior operation. The number of arrests, including 153 in the U.S., are the most ever for any JCODE operation. Empire Market was launched in January 2018, filling a void in the underground marketplace that was created how to get to dark web by the AlphaBay shutdown just months prior. Though Empire Market was initially successful, its glory days were short-lived. Before moving back to New York City, he worked for news outlets in South Africa, Jordan and Cambodia. Hardly a hole in one, but Kalla later admitted he was the user agent in question.
Darknet drug markets operate similarly to traditional e-commerce websites, but with additional layers of anonymity and security. Vendors create listings for their products, which can include a wide range of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and prescription medications. Buyers can browse these listings, read reviews from other customers, and make purchases using cryptocurrencies. The drugs are then shipped to the buyer through the mail, often using discreet packaging methods to avoid detection.
Nonetheless, threat actors adapted, with many choosing to move to the “RuTor” forum for communications and to decentralized platforms such as Telegram-based shops for drug advertisements, as well as offline sales. Russian-speaking DNM customers were historically frequent users of RuTor, where they would exchange information. In fact, much of the Russian-language DNM ecosystem emerged from such forums. However, in the wake of Hydra’s takedown many Russian vendors set up independent how to access deep web vendor shops and automated Telegram shops employing Telegram shop bots, although this did not imply a wholesale move away from DNMs. Despite several large darknet markets being shut down by law enforcement — including Silk Road (coined the “eBay of drugs”) in 2013 — these drug markets are continuing to grow. The “Fentmaster,” who attended medical school before he turned into a darknet drug dealer, shipped these drugs to customers throughout the country using the U.S.
